Chipper Jones

Chipper Jones loved playing for the Braves more than any other player in their history.

The Atlanta Braves and third baseman Chipper Jones agreed to terms December 2, 2005, on a new three-year contract which includes an option for the 2009 season.

  • The Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported Jones would take a $6 million pay cut in 2006 — from $17 million to $11 million — but would receive a $4 million signing bonus in January.
  • Jones’ existing contract called for options for both the 2007 and 2008 seasons at $15 million each year.
  • Jones’ agent B.B. Abbott said those years are now guaranteed at $11 million per season.

The Braves will save close to $15 million over the remainder of the new agreement, which should help the club in this winter’s free agent market.

Jones — a five-time all-star and 1999 National League MVP — has a career .303 batting average, with 331 home runs and 1,111 RBI.
