Today (April 27, 2016) was a game to watch as catcher A. J. (Anthony John) Pierzynski secured hit 2,000.
He collected three hits on Friday (April 22, 2016) night in a loss to the New York Mets at Turner Field and now stands at 1,999 hits in his career. He didn’t play on Saturday.
The list of catchers with 2,000 hits in a career reads like a list of some of the best to ever play the position. Ivan Rodriguez tops the list with 2,844. Others on the list include Ted Simmons, Carlton Fisk, Yogi Berra, Mike Piazza, Gary Carter, Johnny Bench and Jason Kendall.
Pierzynski is 39 and is off to a solid start this season hitting .256/.326/.282 with four RBI on a club with the worst record in baseball going into Saturday. The Braves have lost three straight and stand 4-12, with three of those four victories coming on the road.
Pierzynski previously played with the Minnesota Twins (1998–2003), San Francisco Giants (2004), Chicago White Sox (2005–2012), Texas Rangers (2013), Boston Red Sox (2014) and St. Louis Cardinals (2014).
