Earl Torgeson

Earl Torgeson played for the Boston Braves from 1947 to 1952. He was a first baseman and outfielder. He was born on January 1, 1924.

Earl was a much ballyhooed prospect. He was 23 when he joined the Braves. He had an unusual blend of power and speed. He was a critical part of the pennant-winning club in 1948. He was productive but never seemed to live up to the hype.

When he first got to Boston, many compared him to Ted Williams. He was seen as the Braves’ best power-hitting prospect since Wally Berger.

We can’t really fault the left-hander for not being as good as Ted Williams. Who has been?
