It was supposed to be an interim assignment in 1966. Billy Hitchcock got the job after Bobby Bragen was fired on August 9, 1966. The team responded and played pretty well under him.
Hitchcock was given a contract for 1967. He should have stayed with the “interim” title. They fired Billy on September 28 with three games left in the season. Coach Ken Silvestri took over for those last three games.
The Atlanta Braves ended the season in seventh place with a record of 77-85. They were 24 1/2 games behind the leader.
